Essentials of Research Methodology and Writing

(Suitable for: G9 - G11)

Course Description

Want one of the most sought-after skills or abilities a college student could have on Day 1 of university? Know how to do research properly! Regardless of the discipline, the ability to conduct intelligent, ethical, and well-constructed research projects or studies is an absolutely essential skill that will set you apart. The Essentials in Research Methodology and Writing course provides an introduction to why we conduct research as well as how to do it correctly and ethically. Topics for this course will include questions such as, Why do research? What makes for good research? How should you frame the research question? What are qualitative and quantitative method types and examples and which are most appropriate for which kind of research? What are the structure and components of the research paper? How do you conduct research and data collection? How do you read research for understanding? How do you write high quality papers that captivate readers’ interests?

Internships and Research Projects

Students interested in participating in ANY research projects with Perceiver are required to take GEN23-1 to be eligible for assignment or selection.

Eligibility

Mature students in grades 9-11 with a strong interest in research or academic disciplines. Students should be able to write clearly and analytically in English, with particular emphasis on research writing skills. Students are expected to engage and participate collaboratively, be proactive and take initiative, be professional, courteous, and respectful, and attend all classes on time and come prepared. Basic understanding of research, public policy, and the ability to do conversions and formulas is a plus.
