Accomplished Scholar Leadership - STEM

Intro to Experimental Neurobiology

(Suitable for: G9 - G11)

Year of 2022-2023

Course Description

Injury and degeneration of the nervous system pose a significant public health and economic challenge, affecting nearly one-third of Americans with a cost exceeding $500 billion each year. Thus, understanding how the brain functions and responds to disease and injury may ultimately lead to novel therapies to combat these conditions.

This course will explore the biological basis of neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. Students will first learn the major features of each disorder through multiple small sections of anatomical basis and pathological changes of disease. We will also discuss the recent progress in research and study the methods normally used in the field, such as transgenic animal models and disease related behavioral and biological features. During the last session of each disease block, students will be instructed to read research publications, discuss and present the literature; a process that can help students better understand how researchers study the mechanisms of the disease and how the hypothesis being explored can be translated to therapeutics. By the end of the course, students are expected to give a presentation that either summarizes what they learned in this course or present a literature review selected by the lecture. Specific diseases covered may vary from year to year. This year we will focus on Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI)

Tuition
  • US$ 1,200

  • Refund Policy: After the first session, student can drop off and get 100% refund before the second session.

Learning Philosophies

Interactive learning environment that encourages creativity, curiosity, and growth. In some classes, we will have students participate in data analysis tasks to have first-hand experience with neuroscience research. Students are also encouraged to predict or even guess the results of some tasks to improve their critical thinking abilities.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the basics of neurobiology of diseases

  2. Learn major biological feature of TBI including primary and secondary injuries

  3. Learn current research progress in the field of TBI

  4. Learn major biological feature of SCI and current research progress

  5. Be able to read literature in basic research about TBI and SCI and discuss the logic behind a study

  6. Identify the hypothesis and discuss how the research design addresses the hypothesis
