Criminal Minds: The Psychology of Social Deviance

(Suitable for: G9 - G11)

Fall Semester 2023

Course Description

Why do some people commit crime? This course provides students with a deeper insight into the psychology of the criminal mind, diving into how social deviance operates and is handled within society. Students will learn how to define crime and its different forms, explain biological and psychological factors that contribute to criminal behavior, analyzes the social and environmental factors that contribute to crime, evaluate the different methods of measuring crime, understand the distribution of crime across different societies, identify characteristics of different types of criminal conduct, and analyze different approaches to crime control.

Internships and Research Projects

Students interested in Psychology research projects are required to take PSY23-2 to be eligible for assignment to an internship or project in Psychology. Students interested in participating in ANY research projects with Perceiver are required to take GEN23-1 to be eligible for assignment or selection.

Eligibility

Mature students in grades 9-11 with a strong interest in Psychology disciplines. Students should be able to write clearly and analytically in English, with particular emphasis on research writing skills. Students are expected to engage and participate collaboratively, be proactive and take initiative, be professional, courteous, and respectful, and attend all classes on time and come prepared. Basic understanding of public policy, statistics, and the ability to do conversions and formulas is a plus.
