The World of Children’s Literature

(Suitable for: G9 - G11)

Fall Semester 2023

Course Description

Is there an art to creating literature for children? In this introductory course, students will explore the historical and contemporary elements of children's literature, including picture books, traditional tales, realistic novels, and fantasy. Through the use of critical frameworks, students will analyze the literary excellence of various genres and explore the role of cultural diversity in children's literature. Throughout the course, students will develop their analytical skills by practicing critical analysis and interpretation, gaining a greater understanding of how children's literature instills values and developing an appreciation for the diverse range of children's literature from around the world.

Internships and Research Projects

Students interested in English/Literature research projects are required to take HUM23-1 to be eligible for assignment to an internship or project in English/Literature. Students interested in participating in ANY research projects with Perceiver are required to take GEN23-1 to be eligible for assignment or selection.

Eligibility

Mature students in grades 9-11 with a strong interest in English/Literature. Students should be able to write clearly and analytically in English, with particular emphasis on research writing skills. Students are expected to engage and participate collaboratively, be proactive and take initiative, be professional, courteous, and respectful, and attend all classes on time and come prepared.
